Gemini vs ChatGPT: Which AI Should You Use? — the Gemini and ChatGPT app icons side by side

Quick answer: For most people, ChatGPT is the better all-round assistant for writing, ideas and coding help. Gemini is the better choice if you work in Google apps every day, or if you want AI video and image editing. Both have good free plans, and in India both have been offered free or cheap — so the smartest move is to try your real tasks in both.

ChatGPT and Gemini are now the two most used AI assistants in the world. Both can write, explain, research, create images and help with code. So which one should you actually use?

This guide compares Gemini vs ChatGPT in simple English: the latest models, benchmark scores, how many people use each, which is better for writing, images, video and coding, and what each plan costs in India.

Latest models and benchmark scores

Both companies release new models every few months. Here is where things stand in October 2026:

  • OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on 3 September 2026 and calls it its most capable model yet, especially for coding and using a computer. It is available on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. Faster, cheaper GPT-6 models (Sol and Luna) followed later in September.
  • Google's main model in the Gemini app is Gemini 3.1 Pro (released 19 February 2026), with a 1-million-token context window — it can read very long documents in one go. Google announced Gemini 4 Argon in September 2026, but only in a limited release so far.

Benchmarks are standard tests that AI companies use to compare models. Here are some scores as reported by each company:

BenchmarkWhat it testsGPT-6 Astra (OpenAI)Gemini (Google)
GPQA DiamondGraduate-level science questions96.0%94.3% (Gemini 3.1 Pro)
DeepSWE v1.1Real software engineering tasks74.1%77.9% (Gemini 4 Argon, limited release)

What this means for you: at the top level, both are extremely capable, and a few points on a test rarely change your everyday experience. Each company runs its own tests in its own way, so use benchmarks as a rough guide, not a final answer. How well a tool fits your work matters much more.

How many people use ChatGPT and Gemini?

  • ChatGPT: OpenAI said in September 2026 that ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion weekly users, up from 900 million in February 2026.
  • Gemini: Google said in August 2026 that the Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly users, making it the fastest-growing product in Google's history. Google also says Gemini creates over 150 million images a day, and that 63% of users speak to Gemini by voice.

Note that the two numbers are measured differently — weekly vs monthly users — so they can't be compared directly. What's clear is that both are now everyday tools for over a billion people.

Which is better for what?

Writing and content creation

Winner for most people: ChatGPT. ChatGPT is very good at matching a tone, rewriting drafts and producing first versions of emails, blog posts and social media captions. Gemini writes well too, and is especially handy when the draft needs to end up in Gmail or Google Docs, because it works right inside them.

Research and studying

It depends. Both offer Deep Research, which searches many sources and writes a report. Gemini is closely connected to Google Search and includes NotebookLM-style features for studying your own documents. ChatGPT is strong at explaining a topic step by step and following up on questions. For long PDFs, Gemini's large context window is a real advantage.

Images

Both are strong. ChatGPT creates images directly in the chat and is good at following detailed instructions, such as text inside an image. Gemini's image editing (known as "Nano Banana") is popular for editing your own photos — changing backgrounds, styles or objects.

Video

Winner: Gemini, for most users. Google's Veo models (in Google Flow, on the Google AI Plus plan and above) are widely praised for realistic short videos with sound. OpenAI's Sora is also good, and quick for short clips. If AI video is your main need, try both on the same idea before paying.

Coding

Both are excellent. OpenAI positions GPT-6 Astra as its best model for software engineering, and ChatGPT includes Codex for coding work. Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro scores highly on coding tests too, and Gemini 4 Argon claims even higher. For learners, both can explain code line by line.

Everyday office work

Winner: whichever matches your office. If your company uses Google Workspace, Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets saves real time. If you work mostly with uploaded files and a single chat window, ChatGPT is very convenient. (For Excel users, see our guide on how to use ChatGPT for Excel.)

Voice and mobile

Winner: Gemini on Android. Gemini is built into many Android phones and can control apps. Both have excellent voice modes — Gemini Live and ChatGPT's voice — so try both while commuting or cooking.

Free offers in India

  • ChatGPT Go free for 12 months: From November 2025, OpenAI offered ChatGPT Go (normally ₹399/month) free for one year to eligible users in India. Open the upgrade page in ChatGPT to check if you can still claim it. It renews at the normal price afterwards unless you cancel.
  • Google AI Pro free for Jio users for 18 months: Jio users aged 18+ on an unlimited 5G plan of ₹349 or more can claim Google AI Pro — worth ₹35,100 (₹1,950 × 18 months) — through the MyJio app, as long as the 5G plan stays active.
  • Students: Google has offered students a free Google AI Plus plan for one year. Check the Gemini subscriptions page for current eligibility.

If you can get one of these offers, it's the easiest way to try a paid plan without spending anything.

Gemini vs ChatGPT for students

Both tools are useful for studying, as long as you use them to understand, not just to copy answers.

  • Explaining a topic: ask either tool to explain a concept "like I'm in Class 10", then ask follow-up questions until it clicks. ChatGPT is very good at patient, step-by-step explanations.
  • Studying from your notes: upload your notes or a PDF chapter and ask for a summary, flashcards or practice questions. Gemini handles long documents well, and its notebook features are built for this.
  • Exam practice: ask for five questions on a topic, answer them yourself, then ask the AI to check your answers and explain mistakes.
  • Cost: students can often use a paid plan for free — through Google's student offer, the Jio offer, or ChatGPT Go in India — so check these before paying.

Always cross-check facts, dates and formulas with your textbook. Both tools can be confidently wrong.

Privacy: what to keep in mind

Whichever tool you choose, a few simple habits keep your data safe:

  • Don't paste sensitive information — Aadhaar or PAN numbers, passwords, bank details, or confidential company data.
  • Check your settings. Both ChatGPT and Gemini have settings that control whether your chats are saved and used to improve their models. Review them once.
  • Follow your company's AI policy. Many companies allow only approved tools for work data. If you're unsure, ask before uploading work files.
  • Verify before you share. AI answers can contain mistakes, so check important facts before using them in reports, assignments or client work.

Try this: the same prompt in both

The fastest way to decide is to give both tools the same real task. Copy this prompt into ChatGPT and Gemini and compare the answers:

Prompt

I work as a [your job] in India. Give me 5 ways I can use AI to save time this week, with one example prompt for each. Keep it practical, in simple English, and point out anything I should double-check.

Look at which answer is more useful, more accurate and closer to how you actually work. Do this with two or three of your real tasks and you'll have your answer.

Gemini or ChatGPT: which should you choose?

  • Choose ChatGPT if you mainly write, brainstorm, learn new topics or code, and want one assistant for everything.
  • Choose Gemini if you use Gmail, Docs, Drive and YouTube every day, use an Android phone, or want AI video and photo editing.
  • Use both if you can. Many professionals use ChatGPT for thinking and drafting, and Gemini for work inside Google apps. With free plans and Indian offers, this costs little or nothing.

Whichever you pick, the results depend more on how you ask than on which tool you use. A clear prompt with context, a goal and a format gets a good answer from both.
